Nigerians won’t go into New Year with petrol scarcity, NNPC vows

Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, has vowed that Nigerians will not go into 2018 with the scarcity of petroleum products.

Baru, who disclosed this to State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday, reiterated NNPC’s position to ensure the pump price of fuel was maintained at the current official price of N145 per litre.

According to him, any marketer found hoarding fuel or selling above the official price will be punished.

“I’m happy to report that we have tamed the monster that reared its head as a result of the rumoured price increase about three weeks ago.

“Unfortunately that rumour instigated a lot of marketers to be very greedy and they decided that their fellow citizens should not enjoy the Christmas holiday and New Year with ease and decided to profiteer starting by hoarding and diversion of products.

“At the beginning I did address the press, telling the world that we have sufficient products that will last us 30 days through the New Year into January but because the marketers wanted to inflict harm and pains on fellow citizens, they decided to hoard products, divert them and in some cases even smuggled products out of the country.

“This has been tamed by the actions we took and I personally led the war around Abuja and other teams led the war in Lagos and other parts of the country,’’ he said.

The GMD noted that already the queues in the filling stations in Abuja had started disappearing, saying that normalcy would soon be restored in the distribution of the product.

He said: “”As of this morning, I have gone round the Abuja metropolis and I have seen that the queues have reduced significantly to almost normal level and few motorists that I heard speaking on morning programmes concerning what I have seen said they have not spent up to 30 minutes to fuel their cars.

““So the monster has been tamed in Lagos, the situation has been brought into normalcy as far as two days ago and we are also achieving the same thing in all other cities.

“I promised that we have sufficient products that will last us for the next 30 days and we keep bringing in 50 per cent over and above our normal consumption into the country.

““And vessels have been lined up, at the moment I have eight vessels discharging products at various ports around the country.

“So Nigerians should enjoy the New Year and that Mr. President’s directive and guidance which has been very helpful has been executed and normalcy has returned.’’

He advised those marketers that had hidden the products in odd locations to better bring them out and sell to the public at N145 per litre, saying,” “if NNPC sold it to you at N133.28, you have sufficient margin within that ambit to be able to supply and sell to the public at maximum N145 per litre.’’

According to him, the NNPC filling stations are selling the product at N143 per litre.

He warned that any marketer caught selling above the official price of N145 per litre would be sanctioned appropriately by the regulator, DPR and PPPRA with the support of law enforcement agencies.

He said the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), would make sure that the products were confiscated and given free to the public.

“This is the directive that we are working on by Mr. President and is being executed to the later. Bring them out and sell these products, we don’t have any shortage and we are making massive loadings.

“Normally we should be able to have 850 trucks to satisfy the National consumption but as at yesterday (Dec. 28) we loaded 1,750 trucks to go around the country.

“So we will continue massive load out until we reach the former position whereby all the stations will have products and truck siding,’’ he added.

Groups warn law school, seek support of National Assembly, others for Firdaus

Lagos School

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria, Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Al-Mu`minaat (The Believing Women Organisation), Social Advocacy Project (SAP), Muslim Student’s Lawyer Association and Igbo Muslims have called on Nigeria Law School and other authorities to desist from action capable of militarizing religious and ethnic groups in the country and allow Firdaus Amasa Abdulsalam to be called to bar.

The group urged the Nigeria National Assembly to intervene in to the matter, set a judicial inquiry on the circumstances surrounding the molestation of Muslim students who were forced to remove their Hijab on the fateful day and general reform of the Nigerian Law School, reviewing code of dressing in the Nigerian Law Schools affecting the manifestation of religious beliefs.

Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola during a press conference, called on Nigerians to stand for justice regardless of ethnic or religious background.

“This hijab saga must be seen beyond religion. It is about human rights. A helpless lady has stood her ground to protect her dignity and for this bold action she has been denied her right to be called to bar. This is what she has toiled for all her life. Her university found her worthy in learning and in character only for the Law School to adopt a yardstick unknown to law to deny her call to bar. It is therefore a battle between convention and constitutionalism. The latter cannot win by any standard. Not when men of conscience and principles still exist in this country. If it is tradition, it must first bow to the course of law.”

The Lagos State University Don wondered why it so difficult for agency of government to accommodate Muslim women’s willingness to follow Allah’s injunction, whereas Western countries like Britain, Canada and the United States have designed uniforms with hijab for their female Muslim police, soldiers, students, Nigeria has failed to borrow a leaf from those advanced countries on a matter which does not cost one kobo, neither does it require technology. All it needs is the will to live together, to tolerate and accommodate each other.

All we have been asking for is that Muslims should be fully integrated into the Nigerian society, he said

MURIC described the action of Nigeria Law School as deplorable and preposterous. “The law school ill treatment of Muslims would not have been exposed if firdaus Amasa had succumbed to intimidation like other Muslims had done in the past because it has come to public knowledge that this has always been the practice in the law school every year”.

He condemned the discriminatory action saying if the Law School has rules which make the wearing of hijab an offence for a female Muslim graduate of law to be called to bar, then the Law School has erred.

“It has made it impossible for female Muslims to practice and to manifest their faith. The Law School has infringed upon Allah-given fundamental human rights of Muslim female students. Our stand here is that whoever persecutes one Nigerian Muslim, whether male or female, has persecuted all Nigerian Muslims”

He called on patriotic Nigerians and progressive groups, feminine liberation groups in the country to step into the matters. The National Assembly (NASS) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the dehumanization of female Muslim hijabites.

End of time and Trump's declaration on Jerusalem?

US President Donald Trump speaks alongside US Vice President Mike Pence (L) about the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by the United States in the Diplomatic Reception Room at the White House in Washington, DC, December 6, 2017. President Donald Trump on Wednesday recognized the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital — a historic decision that overturns decades of US policy and risks triggering a fresh spasm of violence in the Middle East.SAUL LOEB / AFP

“Then, when the second promise came to pass, (We permitted your enemies) to make your faces sorrowful and to enter the mosque (of Jerusalem) as they had entered it before, and to destroy with utter destruction all that fell in their hands” (Quran 17: 7)

During the past week, I have received several messages which were written in response to the sermon of last week which centred around the inglorious recognition, by Mr Trump, of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. As is customary in situations like that, some of the comments were patently steeped in ignorance; others were hinged on sound reasoning and argument. Yet there were others which deliberately ignored the pluralism of opinions on the issues and therefore insisted that only the Biblical perspective to the matter is valid.

In other words, while in my last sermon I affirmed the triadic of claims to Jerusalem – the Judaic, the Christian and the Islamic- some of my compatriots argued that only the Jewish story is valid; while it was my reasoned argument that the three Abrahamic faiths have legitimate claims to Jerusalem particularly given the presence of al-Quds in East Jerusalem, some of our readers would want me, and everybody else, to know that only the Biblical perspective and solution can withstand the text of time.

Since I am not, do not and would never claim an expertise in such a slippery field as Biblical studies, I thought the interventions from our readers furnish an opportunity to widen my horizon in religious studies. However, among many others, I found the perspective below, which is largely unedited, to be highly uncanny. “Your Friday sermon of 15th December, 2017, refers. The solution to the Middle East problem is purely Biblical. As you rightly mentioned, it was not an accident that prophet Ibrahim had two sons, Ismail and Ishaq… In accordance with the Jewish inheritance law, the first son is entitled to double portion of the inheritance. (See Deuteronomy 21:15). If the Middle East is divided into three (3) where would Jerusalem fall into? Will it be in the two-third (2/3) that belong to Ismail or the one third (1/3) that belongs to Ishaq? You answer is as good as mine. The promised-land you mentioned in paragraph five, line two of your sermon, has nothing to do with the Christians. The promised-land was meant for the Israelites who left Egypt to Canaan after slavery. Biblically, Christianity started after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. (See Acts20:26)… In view of the foregoing, Christians have nothing to do with Earthly Jerusalem. See Galatians 4:21-31. In fact it is a misnomer for Christians to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem (See Matthew 6:5-13 and John 4:19-25). If the Jews and the Christians will accept the Biblical injunctions, the Middle East problem between Israelis and the Palestinians will became history. Trump recognizing Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel Biblically will lead to the destruction of Jerusalem and by extension hasten the end time (See Luke 21:5-37) with emphasis on verse 20. Thanks”

It is axiomatic that our compatriot no doubt has a passion and zeal for the Biblical. I do not intend to explore the underbellies of the totality of the claims he made in his message to me. But I disagree with his argument that Christians should not concern themselves with “earthly Jerusalem” for two reasons: one, it gives a wrong sense of the Christian as a subject who is expected to show little or no compassion for the oppressed and the dehumanized, no matter their race or creed. Two, his opinion appears hinged on the lack of awareness that Christians constitute an integral part of the around eight million population of Israel today.

In other words, whereas it is true that Jews constitute nothing less than seventy percent of the Israeli population, Christians (around two percent) are found in various numbers in parts of northern Israel. Father Pietro Felet, of the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land once said: “We are a mixture of Arab Christians, Hebrew-speaking Christians and Christians from the former Soviet Republic. About 45% are Catholic, 40% are Orthodox and 20% fall under the category of ‘other.” The cities with the largest Christian populations are Nazareth, with 22,400, Haifa with 14,400, Jerusalem with 11,700 and Shfaram with 9,400. Thus the suggestion that Christians should not concern themselves with the Jerusalem today might have no basis in reason and indeed revelation.

Now with reference to whether Mr Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel would lead to the destruction of the city and hasten the end of time as contained in Luke 21: 5-37), the Quranic perspective is highly instructive. “And we decreed for the children of Israel in the Scripture, that indeed you would do mischief on the earth twice and you will become tyrants and extremely arrogant!” (Quran 17: 4-8).

The Almighty says further:  “So, when the promise came for the first of the two, We sent against you agents from us given to terrible warfare. They entered the very innermost parts of your homes. And it was a promise (completely) fulfilled. Then we gave you once again, a return of victory over them. And We helped you with wealth and children and made you more numerous in manpower. (And We said): ‘If you do well, you do good for yourselves, and if you do evil (you do it) against yourselves’.(ibid)

Now the Almighty issues the final warning: “Then, when the second promise came to pass, (We permitted your enemies) to make your faces sorrowful and to enter the mosque (of Jerusalem) as they had entered it before, and to destroy with utter destruction all that fell in their hands (ibid).

Those imbued with knowledge and discernment know that whenever it is time for a nation to experience liquidation, two different types of processes are usually set in motion; the internal and the external. Could it be that Mr. Trump is indeed one of the signs of the “last hour” for America? Is his unpopular decision one other sign of the end? It is only he who cares not what becomes of the world that would grant the sacred to the profane, that would take what belongs to the Almighty to the cathedral of debauchery and faithlessness.

Tottenham 5-2 Southampton: Record-breaker Harry Kane nets stunning hat-trick as Dele Alli and Son Heung-min add gloss to scoreline in Saints thrashing

Harry Kane stole the show by breaking the record for the most Premier League goals in a calendar year as Tottenham eased past Southampton.

The England international met Christian Eriksen's 22nd-minute free-kick to give Spurs a 1-0 lead at Wembley and surpass Alan Shearer's 22-year-old record before adding a second in the first-half.

It was more of the same from Spurs in the second half, with Dele Alli curling home a delightful third goal, and the midfielder then turned provider by playing in Son Heung-min, who grabbed the dominant hosts' fourth.

Sofiane Boufal grabbed Saints' first before Kane netted his hat-trick goal with a well-taken left-footed chip. Dusan Tadic grabbed a late second for the away side but it was a comfortable win for the hosts.

Popular Yoruba actress, Yewande Adekoya has reportedly been placed under house arrest in the United States of America for crimes related to credit card scam and bank transfer fraud.

Just In: Lagos State Police Command Releases Official Statement On Arrest Of Singer Praiz

Few days ago, we reported that X3M music act, Praiz was arrested by SARS officers while on his way to the label’s end of the year party on on Tuesday December 19th.

The arrest which was condemned by Nigerians and fans of the singer, has led to the release of an official statement by the Lagos State Police Command on what led to the singer’s arrest.

Read the statement below:

“On the 19th day of December 2017, at noon hours, police men attached to Area ‘J’ Command Headquarters, Ajah, Lagos, who were on routine anti crime patrol along Lekki/Epe express way, noticed a car at top speed approaching their end.

The police men sensed that the speed was much and so were alarmed hence they flagged down the car to check on the occupants and if necessary search the trunk of the car.

When the car stopped, the officers who were in their uniforms approached the driver but to their disbelief, the driver who was yet to addressed by the police men became hysterical without provocation and started shouting ” Sars, sars, sars ooo”.

As he was shouting and pouring unprintable invectives on the officers of the law, he was at the same time filming them.

These unprovoked actions on the part of the driver whose true identity at that time was unknown to the patrol men, made them even more suspicious of him and so they requested him to come with them to see the Area Commander, ACP Felix Oben whom they had already called to report the conduct of the man.

It was at the Area Commander’s office that they got to know that he is a musician that goes by the name Praize. The Area Commander questioned him and advised him to be of good behaviour. He thereafter departed the police station peacefully without any molestation whatsoever.

The Police authority in Lagos nevertheless felt scandalized by Praize’s rudeness to the men in uniform who were out to ensure law, order and safety along the Lekki/ Epe corridor. It is a matter of common knowledge that the Command Commissioner of Police, CP.

Edgal Imohimi, who has dismissed a number of police men that abused their offices since assuming office, would not hesitate to deal with the policemen if they had erred.

It is also instructive to note that the officers are not SARS operatives as erroneously assumed by Praize but conventional police men in their uniforms serving at Area ‘J’ Command Headquarters.

The Lagos State Police Command, wishes to use this medium to inform all and sundry in Lagos state, that the present Commissioner of Police, Cp Edgal Imohimi had on assumption office set up the Citizen Complaint Centre with dedicated lines where complaints against police actions can be lodged for necessary action.

Celebrities are therefore advised to take advantage of these numbers or call on the Police Public Relations Officer instead of resorting to cheap social media blackmail.

37 people were killed when a fire broke out at a shopping mall in the southern Philippines city of Davao on Saturday, Dec 23, 2017.

Authorities confirmed that 37 people died in the fire that started on Saturday morning in the third floor of the mall shortly before it was set to open. The fire continued till the early hours of Sunday. The victims were all call center employees of Research Now Survey Sampling International, an outsourcing company located in the mall.

"This terrible tragedy has left us with heavy hearts," CEO Gary S. Laben said in a statement. "We offer our condolences and prayers to the families and loved ones of the victims."

Initial reports said firefighters had recovered "one charred body" from the fourth floor of New City Commercial Center mall on Sunday. At the time, 36 additional people were missing and feared dead. President Rodrigo Duterte wept and dried his tears with a white handkerchief in front of the public during a meeting with the families of the missing. He said that there was "zero chance of survival" for those missing.

The mayor of Davao also confirmed that all 37 of the people caught in the fire were call center agents for SSI, located on the fourth floor of the mall.

Emmanuel Jaldon, the chief operating officer for the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said Sunday morning that firefighters were in the last phase before declaring the fire out. He said the fire was "technically contained." Authorities have not provided a cause of the fire.

In a statement, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said "our thoughts and prayers" are with the families of those missing. Roque said the President went unannounced on Saturday night to assure the relatives of the victims that the government would extend help.

They had already separated me out from the rest of the family members, to kill.
We thank God for our lives, it would have been a different story if the girl had not gathered mind to place that call.
